8 Ways to an Eco-Friendly Rental

When it comes to saving energy and money, plenty of options can help you do just that in your rental home or apartment, ranging from the small changes you can make yourself to the eco-friendly appliances available today. Here are eight ways to make your rental eco-friendly — making it smarter, greener, and more efficient.

1. Energy Star Appliances

Energy Star appliances and electronics contain technology that uses less energy and helps you save on energy costs. If you’re looking for a new rental apartment, ensure the appliances in your prospective rental are Energy Star certified.

2. Use High-Efficiency Shower heads

Older showerheads can use up to 15 to 20 liters of water per minute — not great if you’re trying to conserve. Install low-flow shower heads in your rental unit, and consider purchasing a rain barrel, which you can use to collect rainwater to use when flushing toilets or watering plants.

3. Solar Panels

If you're looking for an apartment rental, ask if it has solar panels. Solar panels convert energy from the sun into electricity and reduce your carbon footprint. They can also save you money. The average household that switches from grid power to solar saves about $1,390 per year. This reduction can be even greater if you use less energy than average.

4. Smart Thermostat

Making your home comfortable doesn’t require unnecessary energy waste, which is why it’s important to install a smart thermostat. You can program these digital climate control devices remotely, and they automatically adjust the temperature in your home to your designated comfort level and needs, saving you money and reducing your energy consumption over time.

5. Energy-Efficient Windows

When choosing an apartment, pay attention to the type of windows installed. Look for double or triple-paned glass and Low-E coatings on window panes, which reflect heat and light.

6. Move Close to Work

Living close to work can save you thousands of dollars over time by cutting down on transportation costs. It pays to keep an eye out for homes close enough to walk or bike to your workplace. So-called smart cars and carpooling help, too. If walking isn't an option and public transportation doesn’t take you where you need to go, try looking into clean energy alternatives, such as ride-sharing.

7. Eco-Friendly Moving Company

Many local moving companies are available to choose from when it comes time to move to your new home. The best way to select a company is to search for ‘Angi moving company,’ evaluate each one, then ask prospective movers to come to your home to provide a written estimate. Never accept a moving estimate from a contractor who hasn't made an in-person evaluation of the job. Also, ask if they implement environmentally friendly procedures. For example, do they use energy-efficient trucks and sustainable moving materials? Do they plan efficient routes between destinations?

8. Energy-Efficient Lighting

Consider smart-home upgrades, such as installing energy-efficient lighting so that when you move into your new home, you can enjoy reduced energy usage and lower bills immediately.

Going Green Is Easy

The great thing about going green is that it’s easier than you think. With some minor changes, you can make any home greener with little or no cost.
